Real 3D anatomy site launched - powered by 3DSOM technology
June 2011
A new 3d anatomy website real3dAnatomy.com has recently been launched allowing anyone to view high definition 3D models of real specimens in a standard web browser.
The website was a joint collaboration between the University of Bristol's Centre for Comparative and Clinical Anatomy (CCCA) and Creative Dimension Software Ltd who built the 3D content from photos using their 3DSOM Pro technology.
The project leader, Dr Cathy Fuller explains: "What's special about this resource is that although other online 3D anatomy resources are available, most use computer-generated images. The specialist software we have used in creating the resource means that the anatomical models are created from images of real specimens, and in addition are freely rotatable as if the user is holding the specimen in his or her own hand."
All that is required to view the models is a standard (Flash enabled) browser using the following link...
Currently the real3dAnatomy site includes a complete canine skeleton with detailed models of each bone including hotspots, as well as a demonstration showing the thoracic organs of the dog (the chest cavity with heart, lungs and ribs).
Medical specimens
It is important to note that the bones come from a dog which was not euthanased for the purpose of this project, but was donated with consent after euthanasia for medical reasons.
