For best results, an object is placed on a specially designed calibration mat although this is no longer essential. A digital camera fixed to a tripod should preferably be used to take pictures of the object on the mat. The object and mat are turned together by hand and a number of pictures are taken. The images are then processed to generate a 3D textured model semi-automatically. The model can then be displayed in a conventional web browser for rotating, zooming etc., or imported into a 3D editing package for further manipulation.
Mat-free modeling — this releases includes a new approach to creating a 3D model without requiring the calibration mat in the scene. Instead the user can manually "pin" marker points in the photos. A new interface has been designed to make this is easy as possible. See Creating a 3D model from photographs without using a calibration mat.
Curved edge marking — another new feature allows curved edges such as a seam on clothing or a crease, to be manually specified. The curves are digitised to create 3D points which are then used to improve the model quality when running the "surface optimisation". See The Edit Markers Window.
Point Clouds — for highly patterned objects (or using a digital projector), a point cloud can be generated automatically. The 3D points are then used when optimising the surface to create a more accurate model. See Generating a 3D Point Cloud and Surface modelling using projected patterns.
Texture fix brush — 3DSOM Pro version 3 provides a simple brush tool to fix common artefacts in the texture maps. See Spot fixing the textures.
Quick texture preview — In order to help interactive geometry editing it is now possible to quickly preview the model textured using the single closest input photo. See "View-dependent Texture" mode in The View Model Window.
Interactive 3D modeling tools — 3DSOM Pro version 3 provides a collection of new tools for interactive mesh editing including region smoothing, flattening, push and pull and boolean operations. See Interactive Geometry Editing Tools.
Masking with the new curve region tool — A new tool for defining a region when creating masks is included. This tool has a handy "snap to image" behaviour that makes it easy to quickly define a curved mask edge. See The Edit Masks Window.
